However, he never played in any games during his time at Oklahoma State.

Coaching Career
Self's coaching career began in earnest in 1985, when he became a graduate assistant at the University of Kansas. From there, he moved on to become an assistant coach at several other schools, including Oklahoma State, Tulsa, and Illinois. He also had stints as the head coach at Oral Roberts and Tulsa.
In 2000, Self became the head coach at the University of Illinois. He led the Fighting Illini to the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons as head coach. In 2003, he was named the head coach at the University of Kansas.
